In this tour you will learn about the long and proud sports history of Maribor. Leon Štukelj – the greatest Slovenian Olympian – lived in Maribor and nowadays NK Maribor is the main sports collective and biggest success story in the city.

The meeting point will be on Leona Štukelj square. The square is named after the greatest Slovenian Olympian with 6 Olympic medals (3 gold) won between 1924 – 1936. We will walk past Liberty square and General Maister square to the city park. The park was once the stage for Ice Hockey, cross-country skiing and running and it even had two swimming pools. Our next stop will be Ljudski vrt stadium, the home of NK Maribor – a two time champions league competitor and 13 time national football champion. The villa next to the stadium is the headquarters of ASK Branik. They are the organizers of FIS skiing world cup competitions on Pohorje hill – The Golden Fox. This is also the birth place of organized sports clubs in Maribor. At the end of the 19th century we had a mixed population with Austrians and Slovenians living in the city. Because of that the sport clubs were divided between the nationalities.

The road past the Čeligi tower and the city market will bring us to Lent and the Drava river. Today they are the stage of different competitions – rowing, Jet ski, bridge jumping, BMX jumps in the river and many other sport events. We will walk past the pizzeria where the best scorer of the Slovenian national football team – Zlatko Zahovič – spends a lot of his time and past the Tapas bar of the most popular Brazilian in Slovenia – Marcos Tavares – to Volkmer pass. The pass was the spot of the first resistance action against German occupation during world war 2. After the  explosion of a German car many members of the Slovenian sport club were arrested for taking part in it. Out tour will finish on the starting point of the Rally Maribor and Old Timer Rally Maribor on Liberty square.
