The easy 3 kilometer walk will take us from the city castle to the embankment of the Drava river where the city’s main treasure – The Old Vine – lies and back. On the tour you will hear about the 850-year history of Maribor, which started on the now lost castle on the Piramida hill, how the city was fortified, about the good and the bad times of the city, how Anton Martin Slomšek and the south railway brought new life and an unprecedented expansion in the 19th century. I will also add many short stories about the peoples and the times that give Maribor that special charm.
We will see the city castle, the Jewish quarter with a beautiful view of the Drava river, the Water tower and the place where rafters unloaded their wood over a century ago. On the main square we will see the Plague column in front of the 500 year old town hall. The Maribor Cathedral and its one of a kind bell tower where the city’s fire watcher worked are also an interesting site. No tour of the city can be complete without visiting our main attraction – The Old Vine. She is the Guinness world record holder as the oldest living specimen on our planet of a noble grape vine that still bears grapes.
This is just an example of a basic tour. All tours can be customized and tailored to your needs and interests.
